Biography:
From the instant he heard “Kanak Di Rakhi” spinning on his friend's turntable, MC Saj fell in love with the Punjabi sub-culture of remixed music.
“I used to lay on the living room floor with my head between our two massive, vintage Pioneer speakers, and blast Lehmber Hussainpuri, RDB, and Jazzy B records all day long. I was literally transported back by the melodious sounds coming out of the stereo,” he says.
Never forgetting that first feeling of excitement, Saj burst into the music scene immediately after high school. Having toured Canada with well-known artists such as Diljit, Juggy D, Imran Khan, H-Dhami, Mumzy, A-Slam and Avtar Rai, Saj ultimately decided to take some time off to explore other interests.
His life has taken been a rollercoaster of twists and turns since then (including traveling Asia, some feature film work and now attending journalism school) and has since come full circle to find him teamed up with Spice 102.1 FM to host a nightly radio show geared to a younger, more youthful generation.
Now denoted as “MC Saj,” this marks the first time Saj has fully seized the mic and put his own voice in front of an audience. Saj's influences, including Honey Singh, Ishq Bector, Culture Shock and Kam Frantic, are on his melodic, in-your-face yet sometimes traditional, playlist which combines modern elements with vintage instruments and key sounds delivery. Saj’s choice in music, whether club banger or relaxed tempo, are both propelled by, a crash against the crunch of rhythm section, creating a sound that is at once distantly familiar yet somehow completely new.
“When it comes down to it, I figure my music taste is fuelled by equal parts love and animosity, the love of good music and animosity of what has become of the industry. Ultimately, I try to instil a feeling in my audience of the way I feel when I hear a particular song, which is all I need.”
