Bridging The Gap
Sunday 12:00 to 13.00
Biography:
"Bridging the Gap" is a fresh new program on Spice 102.1 fm. As the name suggests, this program is meant to provide a forum for discussion of topics that all South Asians can relate to. The ultimate goal and purpose of the show is to find common solutions to the growing segregation that exists within this community. This program is also broadcasted in a combination of Punjabi and English to make it further accessible to a wider range of listeners and ultimately continue to "bridge the gap". The show never fails to stir the pot of controversy as previous topics have always contained a significant amount of “spice”. These topics have included drug addiction, homelessness in the Indo-British community, sexual abuse, female infanticide and much more! Anyone is welcome to contribute to on-air discussions, share their opinions and even appear as guests!
Simran Johal is the host of this show and although this is her first go at working with the media, she is no stranger to community involvement. Simran has organized and lead many successful volunteer endeavors such as a Cataracts Campaign in Punjab, India that raised more than $10 000 to fund cataracts surgeries to give the gift of sight to those that could not afford it. The camp was extremely successful and brought medical help to over 1100 villagers, including restoring sight to a 15-year-old boy. Simran cites this as her greatest accomplishment to date. Simran also has related educational experience with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Education and is currently employed with the Calgary Board of Education as a general elementary teacher. She has pursued this educational path to gain skills that she may eventually use to become a leader of positive change in her own South Asian community, which is also the same passion that brought her to “Bridging the Gap”. She believes that using media as a forum, she and her team can help bring awareness to pertinent information in our community and bring a new light to some old traditions that may no longer be relevant. She and her team believe that listeners of all ages, backgrounds and cultures will benefit from taking part in these weekly discussions as they challenge you to listen to their opinions, research the facts and ultimately create your own stance. Our purpose is to only open minds rather than preach because as Socrates once said “I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think”. Simran and her team humbly hope that you accept their challenge and tune-in Sunday’s at noon. For more information, please email Simran.spicefm@gmail.com.
